I'm sixteen and I was born in the US but my mom was born in Brazil. She moved here when she was three but she always retained her citizenship. Basically she has dual citizenship. When I was born she also gave me citizenship to Brazil, so I too have dual citizenship. Now, my grandfather was born in Portugal but moved to Brazil when he was in his teens (I guess the Portuguese island he from called Madeira didn't have too many opportunities for him in the 50's). He later met my grandmother and they got married, though I'm not sure if he is considered a citizen of Brazil. What I do know is that in the 60's my grandparents and my mom all moved over from Brazil to the US, where they all became citizens. My grandfather has citizenship to both Portugal and America. Now, I want to live and go to college in Europe (especially England) and know it's easier if you're a member of the EU (which Portugal is). I would love to get citizenship to Portugal regardless of this fact, but I would be lying if I said it didn't play a big part in my citizenship decision. Is it possible to have triple citizenship? Or will I have to give up one (I would be willing to give up my Brazilian citizenship since I've always felt more connected with my Portuguese side anyways) to get another? And how does this all effect my mom? She's not a citizen of Portugal, but she would also become one if it made it easier for me. Only she is more connected to her Brazilian side (she was born there after all) and isn't willing to give it up. Please help if you can, I really need to know this stuff so I can figure out all my options. Thanks.... Read More »
